Aharon Cohen, a former Mapam leader accused of espionage for a Communist country, began testifying today in his own defense in Haifa District Court.
He began his testimony after the prosecution completed its presentation and the court ruled that the charges must be answered by the defense. The defendant was charged with meeting a foreign agent and passing classified information to him.
Another spy trial, that of Lt. Col. Israel Beer, the Israeli military expert, also was resumed today. All sessions in both trials are being held in camera, with secret service personnel giving evidence. The Beer trial is being held in Tel Aviv.
