Following intervention by Harold Trobe, JDC director in Austria, the Austrian Ministry of Finance has agreed that Jewish refugees from Rumania and Poland who invest their savings here will receive the equivalent in dollars from the Austrian National Bank when they leave the country for permanent resettlement.

Trobe’s representations were made following a raid by U.S. military authorities on the Ebelsberg Camp, during which $500 were found on 50 Jewish DP’s. The authorities detained 10 of the refugees.

IRO officials here are meeting with U.S. occupation authorities to discuss a new agreement on refugee camps in Austria, since the previous agrement has expired. Major General John S. Wood, who commanded a U.S. armored division in France, has been named chief of the IRO in Austria. He will assume his post on Jan. 1. Genwood has been field director for the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees.
