President Truman today called on the National Council of the Joint Defense Appeal to continue its efforts “in mobilizing nationwide support” for the programs of the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith.
The President’s statement came in connection with the opening in Cincinnati on November 10 of the fifth annual national council three-day meeting of the Joint Defense Appeal, which is the fund-raising arm of the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Committee.
In a letter to the J.D.A., the President conveyed his “heartiest congratulations” on the approaching tenth anniversary of the organization and hailed the two J.D.A. agencies as the “type of voluntary, responsible, public-spirited agencies that are uniquely part of the democratic scene.”
“Their unselfish devotion to the creation of a better America, their untiring efforts to promote goodwill and mutual respect among Americans of every race and creed, are the very essence of the American way of life,” the President declared. “In these critical times, when the dark forces of communism threaten the liberties of the world, all Americans can be proud of the leadership and practical efforts of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith and the American Jewish Committee in fostering an understanding of democratic rights and responsibilities.”
