President Truman sent the following cablegram to President Chaim Weizmann of Israel: “The people of the United States join me on this anniversary of the independence of Israel in expressing to Your Excellency and to the people of Israel sincere congratulations and best wishes.”

In a Senate speech Lauding the Jewish state on the occasion of her second anniversary, Senator Scott Lucas described Israel as “one of the world’s newest and most courageous free nations.” He paid tribute to Israel for admitting 400,000 refugees since her proclamation of statehood and said that the new state’s example in admitting displaced persons “played an important part in influencing the people of America to press for acceptance here of greater numbers of the homeless of Europe.”
