President Truman indicated at his press conference today that he was in favor of the lifting of the Egyptian blockade of Israeli-bound shipping at the Suez Canal.
Asked by the Jewish Telegraphic agency to comment on a London report that W. Averill Harriman, Presidential adviser, would go to Cairo in an effort to persuade the Egyptian Government to lift the blockade, the President said he had no information on that report and remarked that Mr. Harriman had plenty of work to do in Iran.
He added, however, that if Mr. Harriman could be of any help in securing the lifting of the blockade he would be in favor of his going to Cairo to talk with the Egyptian authorities.
(The report that Averell Harriman may be asked to proceed to Cairo and discuss with the Egyptian Government the possibility of lifting its blockade of the Suez Canal against Israel-bound ships appeared today in the London Daily Graphic. The report says that Mr. Harriman would also ask Egypt to sign a permanent peace treaty with Israel.)
