Rep. Emanuel Celler of New York today addressed an open letter to President Truman in which he called the forthcoming Anglo-American Inquiry on Palestine “a post-dated check on a tottering bank.” He urged the President be speed appointment of the committee, and said that ninety days should be “ample” for final report and expressed hope for “a complete answer” by the end of this year. Celler asked the President to appoint enough Jews to include at least one on each of the sub-committees of the committee.
Addressing the House of Representatives yesterday, Coller expressed his amazement that “the Administration had fallen for this new British mancuvor” resulting in the formation of the Anglo-American committee of inquiry into Palestine conditions. Celler stated his distrust of Great Britain “when it comes to Palestine because she has defaulted time and again on the pledges given with reference to Jews.” The Congressman referred to the “innumerable reports, inquiries and commissions” on Palestine and asked “how do we know whether England will not thumb her nose again at the Anglo-American report that will result from the deliberations of this new dodge of Britain.”
