Truman Proclaims May 16 As “i Am an American Day”; Calls for Nationwide Observance

President Truman today proclaimed May 16 as “I Am An American Day,” and called upon federal, state and local officials as well as patriotic, civic and educational organizations to conduct appropriate exercises.

He said that “the stature of our country has been augmented by the millions who have come here from other lands to realize their dreams of liberty and opportunity.” The President stated further that “loyalty to a great ideal has brought together people of every race; creed, and culture–all blended into a unity which has been the strength of our country and has enabled it to meet every crisis.”
