Former President Harry S. Truman had planned to make his first visit to Israel on May 22 but was refused clearance for the trip by his doctors, according to the Kansas City Jewish Chronicle.

The former President had hoped to be in Israel for the dedication of a memorial auditorium in honor of his late friend and former business partner, Eddie Jacobson. He expressed his regrets at being unable to go in a letter to A. J. Granoff of Kansas City, to whom he sent a statement, read at the dedication ceremony, paying tribute to Mr. Jacobson’s friend ship and his role in the founding of Israel. Mr. Jacobson died in 1955.
