The Tunisian authorities have halted the exhumation work in the Jewish cemetery of Tunis they began two months ago in preparation for conversion of the cemetery site into a public park.
The Tunis municipal authorities insisted on condemnation of the cemetery site in the center of the city and the Tunis Jewish community has appealed to the courts to affirm its ownership.
The municipality authorities had agreed that the exhumation would be conducted with full respect of Jewish religious regulations and customs, but as a result, the work is taking longer and costing more than had been anticipated. The city authorities are now seeking, in talks with the community leaders, some way of expediting the work.
