Andre Barouch, prominent Tunisian Jewish personality and editor of a daily French-language newspaper in this city, was elected a member of the national council of the nationalist Neo-Destour Party at a congress of the movement held at Sfax, it was revealed here today. At one time, M. Barouch was banished from Tunis to the southern part of the country because of the aid he gave the nationalist movement.
Rabbinical leaders of the Jewish community of Djerba, the oldest Jewish community on the Mediterranean seaboard, which reputedly dates back to the time of the destruction of the First Temple, some 2, 000 years ago, today issued an appeal for funds to repair a wall surrounding the community’s ancient cemetery. The wall was recently damaged by Moslem vandals.
