Jews living in Southern Tunisia have been placed in an embarrassing situation by the dispute between the French authorities and the Neo-Destour–nationalist–Party.
The Neo-Destour, which has demonstrated its friendship for the Jews in the past, as asked Jews in Southern Tunisia to sign a petition calling for the end of French military rule in that area. The French authorities disapprove of the petition. The Lewish leaders, who find it essential to remain on good terms with both forces, are now faced with what appears to be an insoluble situation.
The French-language newspaper “Petit Matin” of Tunis, founded and owned by Amon Zana, a French Jew, has been acquired by Andre Barouch, also a Jew, but he closely associated with the Moslem Neo-Destour movement. In 1952 M. Barouch was arrested and deported from Tunis to Southern Tunisia by the French authorities.
