The Turkish authorities consider the 70-year-old legislation governing the status of the Grand Rabbinate of Turkey as out of date and are now discussing new legislation on the status of the governing bodies of minorities in this country, it was learned today.

As a result, new elections for the lay council of the Chief Rabbinate, scheduled to have been held this year, have been postponed until promulgation of the new legislation. The lay council is in charge of the Jewish community’s administrative, social and cultural affairs. The present council was elected two years ago.
