United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold’s visit to the Middle East has aroused no hopes here of an Israel-Arab settlement. Turkish opinion, expressed freely in yesterday’s press, holds that as long as the Arab states deny Israel’s existence there can be no progress towards peace.
The newspaper “Dunya” wrote that “we do not expect positive results from Mr. Hammarskjold’s visit because we cannot see any realism in King Hussin.” The same publication, referring to Iraqi King Feisal’s statement in Parliament calling for the destruction of Israel, noted that “as long as this mentality exists no peace can be achieved.
The daily, “Yenisabah,” was also pessimistic over the Secretary General’s prospects It, too, cited King Feisal’s words and concluded that the “Arabs should give up the dream of wiping Israel off the map. Only then can the present minor conflicts be solved.”
