Rabbi Raphael Saban of this city has been elected Chief Rabbi of Turkey, filling a post that has remained vacant since 1931. Seventy-seven year old Rabbi Saban served as secretary to the Turkish Chief Rabbi in the latter part of the 19th century. For the last 15 years he has been president of the Religious Council of the Grand Rabbinate, Turkish Jewry’s representative body.
