The Turkish government today disavowed the expulsion of the Jews from the Dardanelles region and promised legal redress to hundreds of Jews made homeless by the expulsion edict.
The National Assembly discussed the expulsions at length today. During the course of the debate, the Prime Minister announced that the government will severely punish the officials responsible for driving hundreds of Turkish Jews out of their homes to become penniless refugees.
An official communique of the government stated that the expulsions have been due to a misinterpretation of the new edict whereby Turkey has been divided into “residence zones.”
Meanwhile, hundreds of victims of this misinterpretation are in desperate straits here, in other Turkish cities and in Greece, since they have hurriedly disposed of all their possessions in order to comply with the eviction order.
The government has not yet made it clear whether these unfortunates are to be reinstated in their homes.
