Twenty-five alleged terrorists rounded up in the four days since martial law was imposed were deported to Kenya, British East Africa, by air this morning. They are reported to include members of the Irgun Zvai Leumi and the Stern Group. (The internment camp for Palestinian Jews at Asmara, Eritrea, has been moved to Kenya, the authorities announced last week.)
Meanwhile, the first sixteen military courts established in Jerusalem under the martial law edict began operation today. Most of the cases dealt with infractions of the curfew and military regulations. The average punishment imposed was a $4 fine. Typical “defendants” were two youths who were accused of violating martial law regulations by riding their bicycles.
Maj. Gen. Gordon H.A. MacMillan, British commander in Palestine, today visited the area of “Operation Elephant,” which is what the military have dubbed the martial law operations in Tel Aviv and the vicinity. Lt. Col. Sheffield, the army’s press officer in Tel Aviv, said that the official estimates of those unemployed in Tel Aviv because of military rule was 5,000 but he believed the actual figure was higher. He refused to disclose the scale of the operations and arrests, declaring that the information might aid the terrorists. Telephone service within Tel Aviv, Ramath Gan and Petach Tikvah was resumed today for local calls, but no inter-urban communication was allowed.
Mayor Rokach of Tel Aviv and a group of economic experts came to Jerusalem to confer with the authorities on the supply of raw materials needed by plants in the blockaded area. Later, a meeting of the Histadruth and the Jewish Manufacturers Association in Haifa agreed that there would be no lock-outs or strikes until martial law is lifted, in order not to further cripple the economy.

Brigadier Davies, in charge of “operation Hippo, “the name given the Jewish quarters of Jerusalem, conferred today with Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog on arrangements for the Sabbath religious services. Meanwhile, the children in the besieged areas observed the dreariest Purim eve of their lives. No fireworks were allowed and “greggers” and costumes were almost unobtainable. Even Human Tashen were missing, since they were not considered “essential” food.
After several hours of firing in Jerusalem last night, following an alleged attack on the perimeters of one of the four British security zones, the scene of violence shifted to Hadera during the night where an army camp was attacked by mortars and small arms fire. Three soldiers were wounded and several of the attackers are believed to have been hit. Police dogs are being used to follow a trail of blood left by the attackers. According to Jewish sources the reported attack on the security zone sentry post which is near the Jewish Agency building, was actually an exchange of shots between trigger-happy sentries and nervous police.
