Two explosions today rocked the Haifa Bay area, as five unidentified men blasted a railroad signal box at Neve Shanan, on the outskirts of Haifa, and a section of the British Shell Company’s oil pipe-line. An official communique said an Arab boy was killed in the first bombing.
The attackers, who arrived in a commandeered taxi and truck, subdued an Arab signalman who was stationed at the control box and then planted their explosives. Two railroad workers were also reported injured. The pipe-line burst into flames which were soon brought under control by local firemen.
At Kfar Samir a rail bridge was mined, but the explosion caused no damage. In all instances the raiders, who were dressed in Arab clothes, escaped.
In the Guela quarter of Haifa, a taxi driver and the drivers of two trucks were held up this morning by ten armed men who held them prisoners for over an hour. By the time they were released, the official communique said, their vehicles had vanished and still have not been traced.
It was also announced today that eight sticks of Italian-manufactured dynamite, complete with a detonator and an 18-inch safety fuse, were discovered yesterday in the forward hold of the Four Freedoms, refugee vessel which brought 1,200 visaless immigrants to Palestine last week.
