Two Jewish leaders have praised Timothy Cardinal Manning, Archbishop of Los Angeles, for his call to Greater Los Angeles Catholics asking them to recite prayers on behalf of Jews during their observance of the Jewish High Holy Day period. Rabbi Balfour Brickner, director of the department of interfaith activities of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the association of Reform synagogues, and Lee Goldin, president of the UAHC’s southwest council, called Cardinal Manning’s request “a reverent act” and one “furthering the goal of Catholic-Jewish harmony.”
