Two Jewish women of British nationality have earned the distinction of being the first of their sex to cross the Sinai Desert by car from Jerusalem to Cairo.
The women are Mrs. S. Henderson, wife of the promoter of a new Jerusalem-Cairo-and-return automobile service, and Mrs. R. Meltzer, wife of the Jerusalem journalist.
The route taken by the two women was via Hebron and Beersheba to Hasna, the half way halt to the Sinai Desert and thence to Kubri and Suez on the Canal. From Suez there is an asphalt road to Cairo. The actual travel in the desert sands took eight hours while the entire trip took twelve hours.
If the present attempts to prove that a service is economical can be justified, a regular car line will be started between both cities, it is stated.
