The editor of the ORBIS news agency, and the agency’s Munich correspondent, Luigi Moscano, today were sentenced to five months’ imprisonment and fines of $200 each for printing an article which praised anti-Semitic and racist principles and methods of the outlawed Nazi and Fascist parties. Both men have appealed the convictions.
The article, emanating from Munich, Germany, was printed by ORBIS last October 27. It was immediately denounced as Nazi-Fascist by many Italians and by Jews in Italy who charged that ORBIS had violated a constitutional provision prohibiting endorsement of Nazism and Fascism. The prosecutor, during the trial, had demanded that the men be sentenced to a year in jail and to fines of $500 each.
