About 66 percent of the 3,876 Jewish congregations in the United States had permanent rabbis in 1951, it was reported here today by the Jewish Statistical Bureau.
Rabbi Louis I. Newman, chairman of the board of directors of the Bureau, said this percentage is the highest in American Jewish history. In New York City 70 of every 100 congregations have permanent rabbis. Fifty years ago only 48 of every 100 congregations in the United States employed permanent rabbis. In 1927 the number increased to 58.
