A severe typhus epidemic is raging among the more than 20,000 Jewish refugees in Japanese-held Shanghai, according to reports reaching here today. The Jewish hospital there is jammed beyond its capacity and the mortality rate is extremely high since the Japanese have confiscated most available medical supplies for use by their troops.

Control over the Jewish refugees in Shanghai is reported to have been placed in the hands of the Gestapo by the Japanese. Christian Zissner, Gestapo chief, has launched an anti-Jewish crusade in the city. The “Beobachter in Asian,” new Nazi paper, is conducting a violently anti-Semitic campaign and books by Jewish authors have been removed from all Shanghai libraries.
