The United Arab Republic has informed Dr. Ralph J. Bunche, United Nations Undersecretary for Special Political Affairs, that it would continue to deny passage through the Suez Canal for ships and cargoes originating in Israel, The New York Times reported today from Cairo.
Dr. Bunche visited Cairo this weekend to discuss with the Government of the UAR its continued Suez Canal blockade against Israel on behalf of Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. His visit had been announced a month ago, but when he arrived, the Times said, he could see only a friend of President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Dr. Murad Ghaleb. Col. Nasser and the Foreign Minister of the UAR were at Aswan, participating in a celebration for the start of work on the new high dam there. The refusal to alter the government’s position on the anti-Israel blockade was relayed to Dr. Bunche in a 40-minute conference with Dr. Ghaleb, according to the Times.
