American Jews were called upon to provide immediate supplementary aid to more than 10, 000 Polish Jews recently repatriated from Russia, as well as for additional numbers expected to return, by Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, executive vice-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal and spokesman for the Appeal’s fourth overseas study mission now in Israel, in a special message to Jewish communal leaders made public today.
Urging community campaign heads in all sections of the country to press for speedy completion of the UJA’s current $30,000,000 cash collection drive, Rabbi Friedman pointed out that funds are needed immediately not only for the resumption of Jewish relief work in Poland, but to help the people of Israel step up absorption programs for scores of thousands of new immigrants; to keep the rescue lines moving for the thousands who still wait their turn to resettle in free lands; and to continue the network of UJA-supported welfare operations in more than a score of countries.
