A drive to raise $40, 000, 000 in cash by year’s end to meet a cash emergency” jeopardizing the rescue, relief and rehabilitation programs of its agencies in Israel and 24 other countries, was launched Monday by the United Jewish Appeal.
Announcement of the campaign was made at a special session of the Appeal’s 51-man National Campaign Cabinet, the organization’s top policy and campaign-planning body, at the Waldorf-Astoria, They adopted a resolution calling upon community campaigns to conduct special organized cash efforts to secure payment of outstanding pledges to meet a critical need for cash” to maintain the operations of the agencies whose programs are financed by UJA funds.
The resolution warned that “recent developments of the international crisis centering about the Middle East have placed Israel’s people in the midst of peril and have created a necessity for them to devote almost every resource to stringent safety measures. ” It pointed out that the threat to Israel made it “impossible for Israel’s Government to continue major allocations of funds to the Jewish Agency for the absorption of immigrants, leaving Actually the entire burden upon the Agency and the United Jewish Appeal. “
The UJA cash campaign seeks to collect $40, 000, 000 in cash against community pledges by December 13, when the annual National Conference of the Appeal opens in New York City. The first $20, 000, 000 of this sum is sought by October 29, when members of a special UJA Study Mission will leave for Israel. The Study Mission group hopes to bring this amount with them to Israel.
