A group of members of the annual study mission of the United Jewish Appeal left here today for Israel on the second leg of their tour to observe Jewish problems and needs overseas after an inspection of installations in Austria caring for transients on their way to new homes in Israel, the United States and other parts of the world.

The group also visited the site of the former Mauthausen concentration camp near the Czech border where the mission members paid their respects to the victims of the Nazi holocaust. During their five-day visit to Austria, the group was received by U.S. charge d’affaires Robert Brandin in the absence of Ambassador James W. Riddleberger who was in Washington on official business. Mr. Brandin spoke of the work of the Joint Distribution Committee as a welcome supplement to the American overseas aid program. They were also received by Israel Ambassador Michael Simon and met with leaders of the Austrian Jewish community.

In Israel, the group will join up with the main body of the UJA study mission for a 12-day survey of the programs of the Jewish Agency and the Joint Distribution Committee. The JDC receives the major part of its funds from the UJA for its programs in 27 countries serving more than 400, 000 men, women and children.

Upon their return to the United States, the mission will report to the UJA annual national conference to be held in New York in December.
