More than 800 Jewish leaders from all parts of the country arrived here today to participate in the national conference of the United Jewish Appeal which opens here tomorrow at the Traymore Hotel to determine American Jewry’s financial responsibility for 1951 with regard to various projects in Israel and relief for Jews in other countries.
The conference, which will continue through the week-end, will establish a goal for the 1951 fund-raising campaign and draw up plans for the mobilization of American Jewry for that campaign, which will be formally launched at the parley. One of the principal speakers at the conference will be Israel Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett.
The retirement of Henry Morgenthau, Jr., as General Chairman of the U.J.A.– a post which he has held since the beginning of 1947–will be announced tomorrow. During the four years of his service as General Chairman, the United Jewish Appeal raised more than $465,000,000.
