The United Jewish Appeal, beginning tomorrow, will seek the raising of $8,000,000 towards its Special Survival Fund by April 16th as a symbolic 8th birthday gift for Israel’s people, and will seek to bring this sum to $10,000,000 by April 30th, it was announced today by William Rosenwald, general chairman of the UJA.
In a message to UJA affiliated campaigns in all parts of the country, Mr. Rosenwald urged fullest cooperation in this birthday drive. The UJA Special Survival Fund has a 1956 goal of better than $25,000,000 and is in addition to a regular national campaign goal of $105,283,435 in behalf of the migration, settlement, welfare and rehabilitation programs that are carried on by its constituent agencies.
Mr. Rosenwald reported that supporters of the UJA have already contributed $9,500,000 for the Special Survival Fund and $19,500,000 toward its regular campaign. He stressed, however, that “the steady worsening of the position of Israel’s people is daily restricting their ability to receive tens of thousands of Jewish immigrants who must leave strife-torn North African countries. This situation dictates the immediate raising by American Jews of another $10,000,000 by the end of April, at least $8,000,000 of this by April 16th, for great humanitarian tasks.
