Jewish leaders from all over the country have been summoned by the United Jewish Appeal to New York to attend a two-day National Rescue Conference which will culminate the collection of $50, 000, 000 in cash inaugurated nationally this week as part of the UJA campaign, it was announced here today by William Rosenwald, UJA general chairman. The conference will take place on June 8 and 9.
Mr. Rosenwald also announced that Philip W. Lown, of Boston, and Samuel Rothberg, of Peoria, 111. , have been named National Cash Chairmen to direct the nationwide $50, 000, 000 cash collection. Declaring that the influx to Israel of Jewish refugees from Egypt, Hungary, other Eastern European countries and North Africa not only continues unabated, but is increasing, Mr. Rosenwald pointed out that the current immigration is placing an intolerable burden on the people of Israel unless the American Jewish community “takes over the financing of the transportation and maintenance of the new arrivals.”
