Twenty-three members of the executive committee of the United Jewish Appeal, made up of top leaders of the UJA and community leaders from all over the country today concluded a three-day concentrated examination of the immediate and long range responsibilities facing UJA, in the organization’s first executive committee retreat.
Led by Joseph Meyerhoff of Baltimore, UJA general chairman, and Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, UJA executive vice-chairman, the UJA’s policy-making leaders held an extended consideration of immigration, absorption and allied problems in Israel along with continuing and changing Jewish needs in Europe, North Africa and other overseas areas. The retreat also considered problems of campaigning and building leadership in 1965.
Louis Pincus, treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Israel, and Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, reviewed the needs facing their organizations. Special reports were given to the gathering by Myrtle H. Karp, national UJA Women’s Division chairman, and Charles Bensley, member of a special committee to ascertain Israel’s needs in secondary education prior to the holding of a special national conference on Israel education problems this September 17 and 18 in New York City under UJA auspices.
Others who reported at the retreat included Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee; William Rosenwald, honorary chairman of the United Jewish Appeal; and Mrs. Rose Halprin, chairman of the American Section of the Jewish Agency for Israel.
