Maj. Gen. E. L. M. Burns, commander-in-chief of the United Nations Emergency Force, met today with Maj. Gen. Moshe Dayan, chief of staff of the Israel Army, to discuss various technicalities involved in the UNEF’s taking over the sector of the Sinai Peninsula just evacuated by Israel.
After their meeting, Gen. Burns stated that all difficulties were being overcome and that he expected that the assumption of responsibility by the UN force would be smoothly accomplished on all fronts.
The meeting took place at the headquarters of the one-time Egyptian commander of the base at El Arish. Both principals and their aides arrived by plane. Among the details to be discussed was Israel’s mine fields in the area. Gen. Dayan said the UN would have no trouble with them. Gen. Burns said that the Yugoslav contingent which replaces the Israeli troops was making slow progress because the roads are in poor shape.
