The General Assembly’s Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee decided here this weekend to devote 12 meetings, during the current session, to further debate on drafting a U.N. Declaration and Convention “on elimination of all religious intolerance.” Adoption of such an instrument has been blocked by the Soviet and Arab delegations since it was first proposed in 1959.
The committee also decided to devote several meetings to discuss measures to be taken against Nazism, and 10 meetings to debate a proposal to ban statutes of limitations on the prosecution and punishment of persons accused of genocide and crimes against humanity. Another topic on the group’s agenda is the creation of a new post here to be known as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
