Ambassador Abba Eban today spoke with Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold and reiterated the Israel Government’s insistence on the release without delay of Raphael Eylon, the Israeli sailor forcibly removed by the Egyptian authorities from the Danish ship Brigitte Toft when it was illegally detained at the southern entrance of the Suez Canal.
It is understood that Mr. Hammarskjold has promised to take up with Cairo the Egyptian authorities’ removal of the Israeli seaman from the Danish vessel.
It was also learned here that Israel had requested the Danish Government to intervene with Cairo for the release of the sailor. The International Red Cross was similarly requested to take urgent action to prevent Mr. Eylon’s being mistreated or tortured by the Egyptians. In the past. Red Cross investigators established that Israeli seamen detained by the Egyptians had been tortured.
