The United Nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine today approved a proposal submitted by the U.N. Secretariat suggesting that a “survey group” be set up to estimate the capacity of the Arab states to absorb refugees from Palestine.
The action of the Commission, which coincided with the return from Washington of Paul A. Porter, its American member, followed the approval of the survey idea by the State Department. The members of the survey group will be named by the U.N. Secretary-General. It is expected that the group will include a Frenchman, an American and a Turk. The group will report its findings within three to four weeks.
Meanwhile, it was learned here today that the Conciliation Commission expects to sit for at least another three weeks in Lausanne. The members of the Commission still hope that they may be in a position to submit a completed report to the U.N. General Assembly which opens next month at Flushing Meadows. Failing that, they will submit a progress report and will propose that the Commission adjourn its meetings to Lake Success.
