There is a very good possibility that the United Nations General Assembly will accept provisions in the re-drafted Human Rights Covenant calling for the right of individuals and private organizations to submit complaints of violations of the covenant, it was stated here today by observers who followed the course of the recent session of the U.N. Human Rights Commission, which closed this week-end.
Just before the session ended, five Jewish organizations with consultative status filed a memorandum charging Iraq with having violated the U.N. Charter by the passage of legislation discriminating against Jews who have indicated a desire to emigrate to Israel. The five organizations are: Agudath Israel World Organization, Consultative Council of Jewish Organizations, Coordinating Board of Jewish Organizations, World Jewish Congress and World Union for Progressive Judaism.
The memorandum specifically attacked the Iraqi law denationalizing Jews who indicate a desire to go to Israel and the laws calling for seizure of goods and freezing of assets of emigrating Jews. The document, to which was attached copies of the Iraqi Legislation, said that 50,000 Jews who may not be able to leave for Israel will suffer as a result of these measures.
