The U.N. Credentials Committee has recommended unanimously that the General Assembly accept the credentials of 123 member states, including Israel, when they are formally presented here next Tuesday.
A resolution to that effect was adopted without dissent by the nine member committee late Tuesday. But the Arab group of nations, nevertheless, will attempt once again to oust Israel from the world organization.
Diplomats here said the Arabs intend to offer an amendment to the committee’s resolution that would single out Israel from the 122 other countries and challenge its credentials.
The Arabs have resorted to this tactic year after year, each time with diminishing support from other member states.
Observers will be watching to see whether they gain or lose support in next week’s exercise. A two-thirds vote by the General Assembly is required to reject the credentials of a member state.
The members of the Credentials Committee are Bolivia, people’s Republic of China, Luxembourg, Thailand, Togo, Trinidad-Tobago, Soviet Union, United States and Zimbabwe.
