A convoy of 20 trucks today transported 102 tons of foodstuffs from Haifa to the Egyptian border in the vicinity of Gaza where the food, owned by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees, was turned over to the Egyptians under the supervision of U. N. personnel.
The food comprised the entire cargo of the Egyptian vessel Samir apprehended in Israeli waters while en route from Gaza to Lebanon. The expense of the transshipment will be borne by UNRWA. The fate of the Egyptian sailing vessel depends on a decision of the Israeli courts.
It was learned here today that John Blandford, Jr., director of UNRWA, who has his headquarters in Beirut, will resign his post as of March 1st. He headed the agency for the past year and a half. Leslie Carver, deputy director of the agency, will be acting director until Mr. Blandford’s successor is appointed and takes up his post in Beirut.
