Strenuous efforts were begun here today to complete United Nations action before the end of this year on two draft covenants which would translate the aims of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights into international law.
The General Assembly’s social, cultural and humanitarian committee opened this morning the first of a series of 35 meetings given on the agenda to this one topic. Israel is participating actively in the work of this committee and is one of the member states that has urged completion of the work on the covenants at this year’s Assembly. Israel is represented in the committee by Dr. Eliezer Yapou.
Yesterday, the committee adopted a resolution proposed by R. G. Casey, Australia’s Minister for External Affairs, calling upon the United Nations to make a survey among member states of the main trends in the field of natural science. Israel supported the resolution.
