Debate on proposals for direct Israel-Arab negotiations to settle all outstanding differences will be resumed tomorrow in the United Nations Special Political Committee, following attempts during the weekend to work out a compromise arrangement which would make the plan acceptable to both Israel and the Arab countries.
The line of compromise being worked out by the so called neutral powers at the U. N. provides that the resolution calling for direct negotiations will “recall” past U. N. resolutions on the Palestine question. This is seem as a means of getting around Arab demands that the talks be held within a fremework of past U. N. decisions, and Israel fears that such a base would strangle the possibility of a peaceful settlement.
