Major General William E. Riley, United Nations Truce Superviser, today lunched with President Weizmann and Acting Premier Moshe Sharett at the President’s residence in Rehovoth.
Among the subjects discussed today, it is understood, was the new situation created by the Syrian request for a 48-hour delay in the meeting of the Israeli-Syrian Mixed Armistice Commission, which was scheduled for today. Also under discussion were the recent “oral misunderstandings” which the General says occurred last week at a talk between himself and Mr. Sharett. Gen. Riley blamed the “misunderstandings” for the Israeli continuation of drainage operations in the undisputed areas of the Huleh swamp.
The Syrian request for a postponement of the commission meetings was based on the alleged illness of the senior Syrian delegate to the body. The request for a delay was made by the U.N. chairman of the commission in a letter to the Israelis. Meanwhile, some 60 shots were fired by Syrian troops this week-end against the Jewish settlement of Kfar Szold.
