James G. McDonald, U.S. Ambassador to Israel, today denied rumors circulating here that he intends to resign from his post in Tel Aviv. McDonald called on President Truman at the White House today and later said that they talked about Israel.
Asked if they had touched on the Israel offer to readmit 100,000 Arab refugees, Ambassador McDonald said that was “one of the $64 questions you can’t say anything about”. He declined specific answers to questions on Lausanne and Israel-American relations. He will continue consultations with high government officials here and his present plans call for his return to Israel at the end of September.
Later, at his press conference, the President was asked to state his views on the repatriation of Arab refugees and answered that he had already expressed his views on the subject. A check with the White House could not reveal when the President had expressed his views on the subject. He also refused to disclose details of his talk with Ambassador McDonald.
