Lieut. Gen. Geoffrey Keyes, U.S. commander in Austria, issued a statement to all Jewish personnel in his command extending best wishes for the coming High Holidays. Gen. Keyes said the observance of the holidays “is of particular significance, representing a fundamental concept of the American way of life–freedom of religion.”
The U.S. commander said that the Holy Days are important not only in their religious aspect, but in the sense that “they will renew the strength of the Jewish members of this command to continue unabated the present difficult tasks of re-establishing Austria as a free and independent nation.”
