Israel should be included in the worldwide United States stockpiling of foods for emergencies in friendly nations, Victor L. Anfuso, New York Democrat, said here today at a press conference at the U.S. Embassy.
Rep. Anfuso, chairman of a Congressional subcommittee on agricultural surpluses, which recently held hearings on the national and international stockpiling project, said “furnishing of arms is not the best way to peace.” The best weapon for fostering peace is supplying food, he declared.
He disclosed Israel had asked the Eisenhower Administration for surplus food for 1957 and 1958 of an approximate value of $100,000,000 double the amount Israel was provided during 1955 and 1956. He said the Israel request for the next two years, like that of the previous two, was mainly for wheat, corn, beef, dry milk, butter and edible oil, adding he would support the request because he had become convinced during his visit here that Israel was making excellent use of such American aid.
