While the State Department has denied published reports that Israel’s request for arms has been turned down, informed circles here today expressed the belief that the Defense Department is holding up approval, and that the reports published last week to that effect actually reflect the views held by the Defense Department. According to these reports, the Defense Department questions whether arms can be spared for Israel from allotments for Western European countries.
(A report from Tel Aviv today stated that President Weizmann is considering sending a personal appeal to President Truman to authorize the shipment of arms for defense purposes to Israel in view of the extensive rearming of the Arab states.)
