Practicing Hebrew teachers in the United States and other parts of the world, and recent graduates of Hebrew teachers seminaries, are being offered an 11-month term of advanced studies in Judaica and training in all aspects of education at the newly established Hayim Greenberg Teachers Institute opening in Jerusalem in November it was announced here today by the Jewish Agency.
The Hayim Greenberg Institute was founded last year by the Jewish Agency’s Department of Education and Culture in the name of the late Dr. Hayim Greenberg American member of the Jewish Agency executive and an outstanding Zionist writer, lecturer and philosopher. Its purpose is to give young Hebrew teachers a thorough grounding in Jewish studies and to make Israel’s social cultural and educational life a part of their daily learning experience.
Applicants accepted by the Institute will receive a complete scholarship covering room board and tuition in Israel. They must be graduates of accredited Hebrew teachers colleges intending to make teaching their career or licensed Hebrew teachers who wish to broaden their knowledge of the Hebrew language and of Israel. Other applicants may be accepted on the basis of personal interviews Applications may be obtained from the head quarters of the Jewish Agency in New York.
Meanwhile sixty members of American and Canadian Zionist and other youth groups left for Israel last week for a year’s leadership training and study at the Jewish Agency’s Leadership institute in Jerusalem. Upon their return, they will assume leadership posts in their respective organizations. The group included 35 girls and 35 boys in their late teens and early twenties. They come from 12 states and 6 Canadian cities.
In Israel, the trainees will be given courses in Hebrew language and literature the history and customs of the Jewish people, the history, geography, and problems of modern Israel, and the methods and practices of youth leadership. The curriculum includes five months of work and study at various agricultural settlements. The Leadership Institute, now in its 17th year, is sponsored by the Youth Department of the Jewish Agency.
