The American people, in addition to their legislators, have made progress in eliminating discrimination in, housing, employment and in schools, it was reported here by Jacob Blaustein, president of the American Jewish Committee, at the 53rd annual convention here of the Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity at the Edgewater Beach Hotel.
Mr. Blaustein, who was inducted into the fraternity as an honorary member, declared that much remains to be done before the world is convinced that America means what it says and does. He said that “the plain fact is that millions of people all over the world are fed up with expressions of racial, religious, and national superiority.”
Mr. Blaustein warned of the resurgence of Nazism in Germany and in other parts of Western Europe and the reinstatement of former Nazis in official positions. “We must be on the alert against the re-emergence of Nazism in Germany, “he asserted.”New German parties are being founded, openly devoted to that German type of nationalism, which is the fiercest and blood-thirstiest the world has ever known; and destined to anti-Semitism and all the other social hatreds. These parties are gaining significant popular support; in some parts of Germany – in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, for example – they are winning votes in frightening proprotions.
“We know only too sadly what this means in terms of world peace. We know, too, what it can mean to Jews, in those countries and even here. We have seen anti-Semitism used as an entering wedge. We have witnessed what has been described as ‘the dusk of racism’ that precedes the totalitarian night, “he pointed out.
