The Soviet bloc takeover of Czechoslovakia was condemned today in statements by B’nai B’rith, the Synagogue Council of America and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
In a telegram to President Johnson commanding U.S. Government action in bringing the crisis before the United Nations, B’nai B’rith president Dr. William A. Wexler said that “in the melancholy” of the invasion there was also visible in the Czech resistance “the unyielding persistence of man’s determination” to be free. Rabbi Jacob Rudin, SCA president, said in a statement issued jointly with the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Council of Churches that the invasion made mandatory “a voice of protest.” The UAHC called the invasion a setback to world peace hopes.
