U.S. Jewish Leader Says Jews in Morocco Are Well Treated by King

The attitude of King Mohanmed V of Morocco toward the Jews in Morocco was lauded highly today by Isaac Shalom, president of Ozar Hatorah, Orthodox society for Jewish youth education in the Middle East and North Africa. He made his statement after returning from a three-week visit to Morocco and Tangiers, where he met with leaders of the Jewish community and the Government.

During his stay in Morocco. Mr, Shalom inaugurated three new boarding schools for 200 students in Marrakech. Casablanca and Sefrou. These schools like all other 28 schools of Ozar Hatorah in Morocco provide a combined program of religious and secular education and also offer their students food, clothing and medical attention, Ozar Hatorah is educating 6, 000.

In Tangiers, Mr. Shalom in cooperation with the community leaders initiated the establishment of a new Talmud Torah Day School. There are now four Ozar Hatorah institutions in Tangierst Hebrew Teachers College, a ‘kollel’ for advanced study and research, a Talmud Torah elementary school, and a girls’ school.

Commenting on the situation of the Jews in Morocco, Mr. Shalom said: “The attitude of the present King Mohammed V to the Jewish community is very liberal and the Jews appreciate his friendliness. Asto their future, the Jews of Morocco seem very optimistic. The Government wants the Jews to remain and to participate in the development of that country. “

Mr. Shalom also lauded the work done by the Joint Distribution Committee in saving thousands of Jewish lives by giving food and clothing for the poor and supporting educational institutions. “I don’t know what would happen to those people without the help of the Joint,” he said. He also praised the work of the LOSE for the sick and admired the operation of the ORT which offers vocational training.
