A spokesman for the British Government said in the House of Lords today that Britain had been kept fully informed about details of the proposal by President Johnson for United States-Israel cooperation in the use of nuclear energy for de-salting seawater.
The question was raised by Lord Balfour of Inchrye, who referred to the President’s speech at a New York Dinner of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute, announcing the offer. Lord Balfour asked if it was known that the United States was willing to pool its scientific resources for that goal with all countries.
The Earl of Bessborough, the Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister for Science, replied that an expert of the British Water Research Association recently visited Israel and was fully conversant with what was being done in the field. He also noted that President Johnson had referred to the International Atomic Energy Agency at Vienna as the focal point for the pooling of experiences and information on the program. He added that Britain had been represented by two leading experts on the panel convened by the agency for such studies.
