A representative of the United States Department of Agriculture appeared at the office of Charles Cohen, president of the Federation of Kosher Shop Owners, yesterday, in reply to a challenge flung at the Federal body at Tuesday night’s session of the butchers, when they decided to close their stores in protest against prevailing prices being charged by packers.
Sam Pollack, associate general manager of the Federation, had accused the Department of failing to take interest in the butchers’ plight and of ignoring its promise to call a conference to better conditions in the meat industry.
Cohen received the assurance of the Department’s representative yesterday that the Federation will receive definite word from Washington, either today or tomorrow, as to the Federal bureau’s attitude in the present situation.
Meanwhile the Federation is holding in abeyance execution of its decision Tuesday night to close all shops of its members until some adjustment of grievances against the packers is reached. If no alternative is offered today or tomorrow, a Federation committee will meet at the organization’s headquarters at 147 West Forty-second street tomorrow afternoon
